Getting A Cheap Domain Name

Getting A Cheap Domain Name

In order to access a web site an URL or domain name must be supplied to a web browser. This address is a phrase, or sometimes a word, that is descriptive of the business concerned or of the content of the site. Many free hosting companies often offer domain names and it is possible to get a cheap domain name from companies that specialize in them, but there is an essential difference between the two. The domain names offered at no charge by hosting companies are not usually new domains but are in the form of a third level on their own domain names.

Names that are simply tacked on to the hosting company's domain name, so that will need to be typed in as well are what we refer to as sub domains. This means that the domain name will be longer than usual and probably hard to remember. Buying a new domain name will get around this difficulty. Finding a low cost one is easily possible as there are many cheap domain name companies all competing for business.

The range in price for cheap domain names varies from free to approximately seven dollars. To get a free domain name a customer must usually pay for web hosting, so it is still being paid for. Paying for a domain name usually means that you can get it without a bundles web hosting package. Paid for domain names are available for upwards of one dollar.

Whether a person buys a normally priced domain name or a cheap domain name the registration process is the same. The first thing a customer needs to do is check whether their domain name is available. The method of doing this is to enter the desired name into a particular text box and then choosing the extension required. The page will then tell them is the domain name is taken or not, if it is then they can purchase it, if not they will have to decide on a different name. Suggested alternatives will often be offered if the desired domain name is already in use.

What are the disadvantages of using cheap domain names? Unfortunately dishonest companies are the biggest one - a person may not receive their domain name at all if they use one of them. The dishonest company will claim that the customer needs to wait a few days for the domain to become active. When the customer patiently waits for a few days and then finds that the domain still isn't active, they also find that customer services doesn't respond with an unscrupulous company.

Checking with the Better Business Bureau to see if a cheap domain name company is registered, is a good step to making sure that the company isn't fraudulent. This is an entity that checks to make sure that business operate in an acceptable manner. A regular land based contact system of things like a phone number and address are not usually found with a counterfeit cheap domain name company, so a good second step is to see if you can find them. Find out if a company has a good or bad reputation on message boards that are dedicated to webmasters, as a good third step.

A good reason to stay clear is if you are unable to find someone who has dealt with the company you are considering. If you have found a legitimate and reputable cheap domain name company then there is no other shortcoming to using them as a supplier for your discounted domain name. Cheap domain names work in the same way as regularly priced domain, so if a person knows of a reputable cheap domain name company then they should take advantage of it.
