Splitting Time Between Your Home Based Business And 9-5

Many people are finding that working for someone else is just not satisfying.  Having to work the hours that are put out before you and completing work the way your boss say it needs to be done can be annoying. A growing number of people are trying to find ways to free themselves from the 9-5 grind and own their own business.

Of course, while we are fueling our new work from home ventures, the 9-5’s that are paying the bills often have to stay in place.  That means that we have to split our time between the two ventures leaving little personal time.  Often, the home based business is the one that losses out. Without great efforts the home based business will never get off the ground and you will always be in that very difficult building stage of entrepreneurship.  There are ways to divide your time between your home based business, personal life and your 9-5.

The hope is that you will not have to juggle the two jobs for too long. However, the reality is that many home based business owners have to work their regular job for a little while, if not continuously, before they can rely on the home based business.  That means time management is very important.

The most important part of running a home based business and having a regular job is setting yourself a schedule.  Thing about what times during the week will be best for you to dedicate a few hours to your business.  If you have children that are of school age maybe during the time that they are doing their homework or watching television would be a good time for you to slip away.  Also, be realistic and patient about your business.  Don’t expect to spend four hours a night making progress because you will burn out and your family will too.  You always will be tired from a long day at work.  Shoot for two hours two hours max after a long day at work.

Use a portion of your weekend to work on your business.  A few hours Saturday afternoon and a few more on Sunday can go a long way. Of course, if something comes up like a hockey game or a get together with friends, do those things.  You still want to have a life and a home based business is not going to mean that much if you have no friends or family left to celebrate your success with.

Don not start up a number of different projects at once.  If you are working to get your freelance writing business off the ground, you should not start trying to market your renovating skills simultaneously.  Take your time when you are trying to make money with form your home based business.  Stick with one skill until you see a profit from it.  Do not abandon it and move on to another project because you aren’t making as much money as you want immediately.  Take your time and let your hard work pay off.

How To Handle Home Based Business Expenses And Tax Deductions

Anyone that starts a home based business should be familiar with what business expenses and capital expenses are.  Business expenses are common expenses that are the cost of conducting a trade or business.  These expenses include the cost of doing business and you will usually be able to deduct them come tax time.  Some of the deductible costs are business travel, paying employees and the cost of your Internet services if you use them for your business.

Capital Expenses refer to the cost of buying individual things such as equipment or property that you will use for years to come.  The equipment that you have to purchase for your business, such as a laptop or furniture for the waiting room of your lobby, are capital expenses.  While capital expenses are not deductible, you can get that money back through depreciation, amortization or depletion.  This means that you can deduct part of your cost every year to recover the money you have spent on capital expenses.

When you are figuring out what a business expense is, think about if it is ordinary and necessary.  That means that whatever you are buying is accepted in your field of business, thus making it ordinary, and it is helpful and appropriate for your business, making it necessary.  If whatever you are buying falls into these two categories then you can deduct it.

If you are buying something that is will be used for both business and personal usage, you can deduct the business portion.  For example, if you are borrowing money and put 80% towards business and 20% towards family expenses, you can deduct 80% of the interest as a business expense.   The rest is not deductible because it is personal.

In order to deduct part of your home for business you have to deduct expenses for the business use of your home.  You can deduct part of your mortgage interest, insurance, utilities, repairs and depreciation.  If you live in an apartment and are a renter you can still take this deduction.  No matter what type of home you live in you will be able to these deductions for your home office.

In order to deduct for a home office you will need to be able to prove two things.  First, you home office should be used regularly and exclusively for your business.  The other thing that is necessary for home office deduction is that the office is the principle place of your business.  If you conduct some business outside of your home but do the majority of it from home your home office is still deductible.

If you have a free standing structure that you use for your business, like a garage or shed, you can deduct expenses for that as well.  It does not have to be the principle place that you conduct business if it is where you meet with clients, customers or patients.  The percentage of your home office should be what your deductions are based upon.  You want to be sure that you have a full understanding of what the IRS considers a home office before you start deducting.

Best Ways To Market Your Home Based Business

One of the key factors for success when you have a home based business is marketing.  No matter what product or service you are offering your home based business will fail if people do not know that it is out there.  The best way to make sure the word gets out about your business is to have a successful marketing plan.

Your marketing plan needs to have two major parts.  First of all, you will need to know who the market is.  Then you have to find a way to make your product or service known to that market.   These two things go hand in hand.

There are a few ways to define your market.  Some people shoot for everyone, targeting people regardless of their age, income, sex or special interests.  The majority of marketing that home based business owners do is to limited groups that are likely to enjoy their products or services.  Small business owners have a limited amount of money and time to spend on advertising.  That means that they have to target the people that are most likely to buy.

In order to get the most out of your marketing plan you need to think about who would want to buy what you have to offer.  Once you have figured out who your market is you can change your marketing plan accordingly.

Getting this information can be challenging, so one way to do that is to do some research and experimentation.  How are other businesses that offer the same services that you do doing?  Are your services something that are a necessity, or a luxury?  These are important questions to ask yourself.

Checking out the competition will give you valuable information.  Look at any product or brand that can compete with whatever you are selling.  This will give you an idea of what other products are on the market.  Knowing the competition can help you compete better.

Once you know what is out there, find your niche.  What makes your product or services different from the others?  Place emphasis on the special aspect of your product.  Why should people buy what you have to offer instead of the competition?  Are you offering a great deal or a free gift with your services?  If you are running a business that seeing clients, are your hours more convenient that other ones?

Promote your business in any way possible.  You should have a website that details what services you are offering.  Make sure that the website is easy to use and has all of the information clients and customers need to contact you.

Tell everyone you know about your business.  Word of mouth is a great way to let the world know that you have a business and what it is.  Tell all of your friends and associates and anyone that you happen to come in contact with.  Print up business cards so that you can hand them out.  You should have them done professionally so that people respect the card you are handing them.  The presentation of your business will be the thing that gets your foot in the door.

Are Your Ready To Start A Home Based Business?

Having the desire to start a home based business and being in the position to actually do that are two different things.  There are a few questions you should ask yourself before you quit your job and start a business of your own.  Be real with yourself before you start setting things up and building your business.

Take the time to ask yourself a few questions before you make a decision.  The first thing to ask yourself is do you think you are ready to start a home based business?  Confidence will play a big part in the success of your home based business.  You have to believe that the home based business is worth starting in order for it to do well.

Would others say that you are a prime candidate for self-employment?  Sometimes we can be a little overconfident about our own skills.  However, when it comes to whether or not you will do well with self-employment, you need to be honest with yourself.  Think about how you work at your current job?  Are you someone who completes tasks no matter what?  Do you work just as hard at work whether or not your supervisor is in the office or not?  If so, you may have what it takes to get a home based business off of the ground.

There are other questions you should ask yourself.  Have you ever taken courses or seminars about starting and managing a small business?  If you have not, consider doing this before you start a home based business.  You will learn valuable lessons about some of the underside of having a business that you manage on your own.

Are you ready to lower your standard of living while the business gets off of the ground?  Businesses are great ventures but the majority of small business owners start off working a ton and making only a little bit of profit.  You should make sure that you have some type of back up income to keep you a float while you build your home based business.

Are you ready for long hours that often will produce no immediate profit?  Working long hours at a job where you are getting overtime or a steady salary is quite different form working long hours at your start up home based business.  You will not necessarily see a profit from the long hours that you put in.  Of course, there is a bitter sweet feeling for working long hours.  At the end of the day, after the long hours, you will have a home based business that is yours.

Have you contacted a business coach or counselor about your business plan?  There are so many different aspects of owning your own business.  There are legal issues such as what type of business you want to have, the break even point for the business, how a business loan impacts your credit and if you need a special license or permit for your business.  Getting valuable advice about all of these things can help save you time and money.

Living And Working Under The Same Roof

Choosing to work underneath the same roof that you live under can be a huge change in your life.  There are a number of benefits and drawbacks to working from home.  It is important that you are aware of some of these issues before you start your home based business.

The environment of your workplace has major impact on your productivity at work.  A home based business has a complex work environment because the workplace is the home.  Once you have your home based business established and set up, the environment of the home will change.  Introducing business activity into your home can cause some conflicts with family members.

There is always the concern that the home based business will intrude into family areas.  For example, if you are using the family home office for your home based business, and there is only one computer, family computer time might be issue.  Family needs and business needs will be different and keeping the two separate is important.

While many people envision that a home based business will only take up one room in the house, plan for some overflow.  The overflow will probably end up in a couple extra rooms.  The majority of home based businesses take up three or more rooms.  Another interesting notion is that only about one-third of home based business owners have a designated space where they work and a schedule.  This is not the trend you want to follow.  If you want to have a successful home based business that does not interfere with home life you need to have a good business plan.

The best way to keep your business separate from family life is to make sure there is a clear division between work and home life.  Set up the areas where you will complete work.  Make sure you take into account storage and work space.  You should also set up a time schedule so that you have time for family and designated time for work as well.  If your home based business utilizes some of your family spaces, follow an on-demand philosophy.  When someone else needs the space then they should be able to use it.

Your family should be instrumental in the planning phases of your home based business. The more instrumental the family is in the planning of the home based business, the more supportive they will be.  If you are planning on seeing clients in your home, you should try to do so in an area of the house where family will not be.  For example, if you have the room, you can see clients and have your office in the basement.

Take the time to come up with a list of pros and cons of having a home based business.  Write out the advantages of working in the home and the disadvantages.  Think about your home and where the work spaces will be at.  Try to keep work and family spaces separate if possible.  This can make bringing a home based business to your home easier.

Organizing Your Cluttered Home Office

Home based business owners have the tendency to slip into messy office habits.  Having a cluttered desk can slow down production which will eventually cost you money.  By the time you realize that there is a problem you may have already lost money.  If you take a look at your office and see that it is cluttered with coffee mugs, files and random papers, a cleaning is well over due.

The good news is that you can start that clean-up effort immediately.  There are a few simple things you can do to start organizing your home office right now.  The first thing you can do is locate three things and throw them out.  You probably could track down a number of other things to throw out but start off with three things.  Get the recycle bin out and get rid of those old invoices that you logged into your computer weeks ago. How about those old calendars from the previous year?  Anything that has no purpose can go in the recycle bin or the trash.  Start off with three items and move on through the rest of the clutter.

Clean out a filing cabinet.  Filing cabinets can become cluttered and full of statements and files you do not need. It is common to shove things you don’t need into filing cabinets.  While you need to keep business records for six years, you do not need to keep miscellaneous files and clutter.  Get rid of everything that you do not need and organize the things that you do.

Set up a filing system that allows you to keep statements you need for tax time in one place and files you need on a regular basis in another area.  You don’t want to mix files that you are storing with files that you will be using regularly.  This can cause confusion and major clutter.  Designate file cabinet drawers to serve specific functions to keep organization constant.  If you don’t let things fall into disarray, you will have a better time keeping things in order.

Be sure that you are using your shredder on a regular basis.  Paper equals clutter so whenever you can get rid of paper, do so.  Electronic statements for bills can be kept on your computer and printed when necessary.  This is also an easier way to keep statements in order.  You will be able to store them in one electronic file instead of having a file cabinet drawer stuffed full of them.

Keep old files in a storage box in another part of your house.  Keeping files in the actual home office is not a good idea.  Use a corner in your garage to store old files.  You will be able to get to them when necessary and keep them out of the way when you don’t need them.

If you have a bulletin board or message board give clear it.  Get rid of those messages that you don’t need any more.  Often bulletin boards become cluttered with messages that have expired or are random.  Clear off the board and try to keep in mind what it is intended to be used for.  You want to make sure that your work space is productive and the area you have for your home office is really dedicated to work.  Stop putting notes about your kids’ soccer games on the work bulletin board.  Having a picture or two of the family can be encouraging and should not pose a problem.  However you don’t want to have a bunch of personal items on your work bulletin board.

Set Up A Website For About $20 A Month

A home based business has risks no matter what product or service you choose to go with.  However you can get a home based business going for about $20 a month.  This is a small investment that could reap you good benefits from your website.  The 20 bucks will be for your domain name.  Some services charge monthly for domain names but you don’t want to go with those.  Instead, set up your domain, without ads, for under twenty bucks a year.

First of all you will need to pick a good domain name.  You want to choose names that are relatively short and can easily be remembered.  If there is a way to stick keywords into the name do so.  If not, go with something that will pop up when certain keywords are entered.

Look for low cost domain registry.  There are a number of services out there that charge under ten bucks a year.  Stay away from the expensive domain hosting services like Network Solutions.  More money does not mean that you will get more services.  Domain registry services are fairly standard at this point so one service will pretty much give you the same options as another one.  GoDaddy is a very popular registry that does not charge much.

No matter what domain registry service you choose you will have to search for the domain name you want.  If it is available you will be given the name you choose and if it is not a couple of different options will be presented to you.  You can choose one of the variations that the registry gives you or you can come up with another one.

Once you have a domain you will need to find a web hosting company.  Once again, web hosting services can be extremely cheap.  Search for ones that are a buck or so and pick one.  Once you have a domain name and web hosting service, you can start designing web pages.  Domain registry services have tools you can use to design web pages but you also can use your own software to create your site.

Once you upload your website you will be able to start making money.  If you have a product you are selling, try to network with website that sell similar products.  Swamp links with those websites so that your site will come up earlier in searches.  Be sure you are a part of an affiliate marketing program as well so that you will have a good amount of link partners. Go with a free affiliate marketing program as well.  The links are just as good as the ones that you may pay for with a program that charges money.

You should be able to generate some money from having a website.  However you will need to keep up the maintenance on it and update links regularly.  If you have moderate web designing skills you should be able to design your website and make some type of earnings off of it.

Part Time Home Based Business Ideas

Having a little extra money on hand is never a bad thing.  Having a second job will take away from your personal life and leave you exhausted.  However, there are ways to make some money at home without doing a lot.

Everyone has seen the make money online advertisements.  There are some ways to make money online but they are stuck in-between legitimate offers.  Before you decide to take the plunge find out which opportunities are legitimate and which ones are not.

Internet marketing is a way to make money.  If you are able to construct websites and upload links, you can make a little extra money.  There are plenty of musicians and writers that need promotion and exposure.  For a small fee you can complete easy applications like increasing their “Friends” list on MySpace or Facebook.  Post information about events is also another way to get the word out about their work.  As long as you have a computer that works well, you will be able to complete these applications in a short amount of time.

Manage someone else’s website for them.  Keeping a website fresh and in working order can be a challenge.  For small business owners this can be time consuming and cause headaches--especially if they have another job. If you can fix broken links and update the pages of their site you can easily manage a few websites in your spare time.  This is another part time home based business idea that doesn’t take much time.

If you write your own blog everyday you can generate a small income from clicks.  You don’t need a website to blog and you can set up a blog for free through a number of different blog services.  Once you have your blog set up you can post new information every day.  Sign up for free affiliate programs where you can exchange links.  If you go through Blogger.com they will automatically set you up with Google AdSense, another free service that will keep track of your clicks and how much money you make from them.  Once you get ten dollars in your account a check is sent to you.

Another market you can tap is advertising other people’s products.  You can place ads on your blog and have links to purchase products.  A few text or graphical ads on your blog will help promote products without interfering with your blog.

You can also write reviews of products on your blog.  People are always looking for information about products before they buy them.  Reviews are a great way to generate interest in your blog.

The Internet provides a number of different ways to make money without spending any.  Never fall for the scam ads that promise money after you make some type of investment.  Generally, your level of expertise will have a good deal to do with how much money you  make from your blog.  Be realistic about the amount of money you make form your blog.  Most people make a little extra money from blogs but a rare few get rich or make a living from them.

Ways To Find Work You Can Do At Home

Many people have a working at home dream.  The nonexistent commute and the ability to make your own hours is very intriguing for many people.  Of course wanting to work from home and actually getting work are two different things.  If you are serious about working from home, there are legitimate ways to do this.  Of course there are also a number of scams that are waiting to take your money.

Working from home requires discipline and drive.  You won’t have a boss standing over you to make sure you get everything done so you will have to motivate yourself.  You will also have to set up your home office and attract work for yourself.  These two things, especially the latter, can be very tedious.  How do you, a new home based business owner attract business?

Getting a home based business up and running is a great way to work from home but there are other options as well.  If you have a job that can be completed at home, build trust with your current employer.  A great work record with deadlines met can help encourage your employer to take you up on that proposal to work from home.  More and more companies are finding that employees function just as well, if not better when they are able to work from home.  This also saves companies money because you won’t be in the office sucking up electricity and other utilities.

If you work for a small business or a larger one that could benefit from saving money on housing employees in the office, this proposition may be met with enthusiasm.  Show that you do not need to have a boss looking at you in order for you to finish the work you need to get done.

If you want to get your own home based business going, there are plenty of ways to do so.  Think about the skills you have.  Are home renovations your specialty?  If they are you can start a home renovations service.  There is a huge market for this type of work and the trend shows that the desire for renovations is growing.  People are willing to make big investments in their homes to make them livable.  If you are a renovator, there is a large market you can tap into.

Make pet products and sell them online.  Pet owners are constantly searching for ways to pamper their cherished pets.  Everything from organic pet food to cute cat collars sell like hot cakes.  If you are having trouble believing that pet products could be your key to having a successful home based business, think about this.  Remember when you first heard about pet insurance and thought it was a joke?  Well, now pet insurance has become every popular and just about every veterinarian mentions it to the pet owners they see.  While the pet insurance market is tapped, there are plenty of opportunities for organic pet food and trinkets for pets.

Start a home based cleaning business.  Businesses and residential homes always need cleaners.  If you are capable of providing good cleaning services and have a small crew, you could start getting cleaning contracts in a relatively short amount of time.  As a small home based cleaning company you will be able to offer businesses great deals.

Become a wedding consultant or planner.  This is a huge market for anyone that has a knack for style and enjoys planning events.  If you are good with details and are interested in planning weddings this could be a great home based business.

The amount of people that are trying to lose weight is substantial at any given time.  If you have healthy weight loss advice or have a background in nutrition dietary consultation services is a great hoe based business to get into.  Personal trainers that work from their homes also have a huge market to tap.  Knowing what exercising will work which muscles the best is valuable knowledge to have.  People will pay big money to get into shape.

The Wrong Way To Start A Home Based Business

Once your brain starts turning over the idea of working from home, it is easy to get carried away.  With all of the ads you see online for working form home, it can be hard to figure out which ones are real or not.  Of course, if even half of the advertisement that says that you can make thousands of dollars while working at home were true, everyone would be doing it.  Some ads are more believable than others and it can be easy to get sucked in.  Before you spend money on some scam, read this.

First of all, wanting to work from home is not enough fire power for you to start your own business.  You have to have a plan and a service that you are going to provide or products to sell.  Don’t expect to make a ton of money from your home based business initially.  In fact, you will probably end up spending more than you make in the beginning.  That is why you should only venture into a home based business if you are willing to put in long hours and hard work to get it off the ground.  Also, you must be aware of the fact that you may not generate a lot of money and may have to keep your regular job to make ends meet.

Choose something that you love to do.  If you have a hobby that you spend a significant amount of time on that can make you money, turn it into a home based business.  You already love crafting or making gift baskets or whatever creative hobby you are into, so why not make some money from it?  Don’t choose an accounting business if you are not good with numbers just because you have heard it can make good money.  You will need to have a love or at least a like for the business you are in.  Home based businesses are always risky and they don’t always produce a profit initially.  There are likely to be some obstacles as well.  You will have to have faith in your home based business in order to stick with it.

Don’t choose a home based business because a friend of yours says they are making money with it.  While your friend may be doing well with their ebay store, they may have a lot more items to sell than you do.  You may find that having an ebay store is a waste of time and money.  Find your own niche and go with that.

Is your family supportive of your new business?  Run the idea past your children and spouse before you start up a home based business.  While it may be your business, it will affect aspects of the entire family life. You will need your family to help out with household duties or small aspect of your business from time to time so it is better if they are supportive.  However, remember that your home based business is your own.  Don’t let get in the way of your family obligations.

Become A Life Coach And Work From Home

Life coaching is increasing in popularity.  As the world becomes more complex and stress level rise, the desire to have someone help sort through struggles is growing.  A life coach is a great alternative to psychologist and psychiatrists that have been trained in traditional psychotherapy or prescribe medications.  Many people turn to life caches when old fashion methods have failed.  That means that there is a demand for life coaches and room for an expecting home based business to be built.

Once you decide that becoming a life coach is a good idea, you will have to figure out what to be of life coach you want to be.  Life Is complex and life coaches tend to focus in on one aspect of life.  For example, you may have a number of very successful relationships and feel that you have knowledge that can help others be successful in their relationships.  In that case you may choose to specialize in relationships.  Life coaches can pick just about any aspect of life that they feel confident helping others in and specialize in it.    Weight loss, fitness, drug and alcohol recovery and finances are just a few very popular ones.

After you have decided which aspect of life you want to focus on, you can start preparing for your career as a life coach.  It is important to recognize that there is no set standard for how life coaching is administered.  Several different interpretations of what a life coach does can be found.  What your potential clients expect from you can be quite different so you should spend a good deal of time researching what people have to say about life coaching.  You should work on developing a successful format for your clients.

In order to become a life coach you will need to get training and develop certain skills through education.  The training that you will need can come form a number of different life coaching academies that have course your can take.  Some schools even offer accreditation but there are no federal or state agencies that have accreditation for life coaching.  Any courses you take for life coaching that say they are accredited are self-accredited.

You will need to have certain skills to be a good life coach.  Being a good listener, a creative problem solver and having a significant understanding of human behavior can help you be a better life coach.  While everyone will respond well to different strategies, you will need to be able to help people set goals based on personal wants and needs.  Helping others to reach a level of self actualization is very difficult.  Every journey will be different.  Pay close attention to little details along the way.

Patience is very important.  As a life coach people will be coming to you for guidance and support.  You cannot get frustrated with them for running into the same problems over and over again.  Your job is to help them find ways to not make the same mistakes over and over again.

Start Up A Home Based Business For Little Cost

Starting a home based business from scratch can be costly.  If you have very few or none of the tools you need to conduct business, you could end up spending thousands of dollars to get things going.  However, there are ways to start up home based businesses without going broke.

First of all you need to decide on how big this business is going to be.  If you are looking for something to replace your career, you are probably going to need to invest a lot more money.  However, if you are looking to freelance opposed to working for the company that you current work for, this transition can be smoother.  Say for instance you are currently a weight loss counselor for a corporation.  If you have a strong client base and are looking to branch off into Life Coaching at your home, you could do this gradually and with ease. Construct a website and post all of the information that you want potential clients to know.  Tell your current, established clients about the website and mention that you are offering some life coaching services in a freelance capacity.  Once you have generated interest the clients that consider you a beneficial weight loss counselor may consider trying your freelance services.

Tap into the free services that are available for people who want to start up home based businesses.  The US Government Business Resources website offers information that can help you save on start up costs.  Also, there are grants and monies available depending on what type of home based business you are considering starting up.  There are also statistics on what types of home based businesses have the best outlook over the next few years.  This is helpful information if you are not sure what type of business you should start.

One of the most profitable home based businesses you can start is an accounting business.  Accounting home based businesses can may a good amount of money because they offer services that people do not want to do themselves.  You do not have to be a certified accountant to do this but it helps.  However think about all of the people that work for large tax preparation companies.  None of them have accounting degrees and people flock to have these people do their taxes.  That means that if you are able to prepare taxes, you can attract a business.  In addition to doing taxes you can also offer payroll, inventory services and accounts payable.  You will need to be organized and enjoy working with numbers to keep an accounting home based business going strong.

If you are looking for low effort, completely online home based businesses you can get into affiliate marketing or eBay flipping.  These are low effort ventures.  EBay flipping is much like house flipping.  You purchase limited editions of items and sell them on eBay.  One they are sold, you move on to the next limited edition item.  Affiliate marketing is basically signing up for affiliate programs and swamping links.  When people click on the links, you may money.  Can’t get easier than that.

The Facts About Home Based Business Deductions

The Facts About Home Based Business Deductions

Home based businesses allow home owners to recoup expense for their business.  However, when it comes to deductions and rules regarding home based businesses, things can get complicated.  Relying on hear say and information from others can get you into legal trouble.  The best way to stay on top of what you can and cannot do with your home based business, is to carefully read up on the federal laws regarding such businesses.

Does your home based business need a tax ID number?  Well, it depends.  A sole proprietor of a company that does not have any employees may not need a tax ID.  If they do not file any excise or pension plan tax returns, as a sole proprietor you do not need a tax ID number.  Your social security number will be your taxpayer identification number if you are a sole proprietor with no employees.

There are some instances in which you will need to change your employer identification number.  If your home based business changes ownership a new number may be needed as well as if the business has been purchased or inherited and you plan on operating it as a sole proprietorship.  If your business is changing to a corporation to a sole proprietorship or a partnership is becoming a corporation or sole proprietorship.  A new tax ID number is also needed if the owner of a home based business dies and the estate assumes the business.

When does your home based business become a business?  Many people start off their home based businesses as hobbies.  However, there is a line where a hobby becomes much more than that.  There are a few things you want to ask yourself to distinguish between whether or not you are dealing with a hobby or a business.  While there is no one factor that will clearly set a hobby apart from a business, there are a few stand out circumstances to think about.

Are you carrying out the activity in a businesslike manner?  Are you putting in a fair amount of time and shooting to make a profit from it?  Is the income that you draw from the activity part of your livelihood? If you are planning on making a profit from this activity in the upcoming years and including it in your livelihood you have business.  If you don’t keep track of your profits or care how much you make, you might be dealing with a hobby.

What deductions can you take for your home based business office?  The part of your home that is used for your home office you can claim depreciation for.  Typically the area of your house that you use as the home office is depreciated over a recovery period of 39 years.  The straight line method of depreciation and a mid month convention is used to figure this out.  The basis of your home should still be reduced when selling for the allowable depreciation of the area of your home that is being used as your office.

Buying a home-based business

Buying a home-based business

You can talk all you want about buying a business and negotiate all you want with someone who has a home-based business for sale, but it ain’t over til you’ve both signed on the dotted line. You need to draw up a contract and finalize the deal by paying for the business and transferring ownership.

With your contract, you need to make sure you include a description of what you’re buying. This can include stock in a corporation, trademarks, copyrights, patents and so on. This can also include the assets of a business, what these assets are, what the liabilities are that you’re taking on and what contracts or leases are being transferred to you.

The contract should also include the terms of the purchase, the purchase price, the time for payment, the interest rates, the balloon payments, the payment penalties and other relevant details.

It also includes the allocation of the purchase price in the case of an asset sale and seller warranties. You want to be sure that what the seller told you was fact and not fiction. If anything he disclosed turns out to be inaccurate or fraudulent, you want to be covered. Also, there may be hidden liabilities that may not surface until after the sale. You want the seller to make good on these liabilities for your easy money in oblivion.

To be sure that everything’s on the level, the contract may require a portion of the purchase price to be held in escrow. For example, the funds may be held in escrow for one year against the possibility that somebody comes after you for something the seller did. If nothing happens during this time and all is as the seller said it was like easy money in oblivion, then at the end of one year the funds are paid out to the seller. But if an unexpected liability arises, the funds in escrow can be used to cover it so your neck’s not on the line.

Include in the contract the risk of loss until closing. You want to define who’s at risk of loss until the business finally becomes yours. Generally some risk may be assigned to the buyer and some to the seller.

You also want to include any miscellaneous factors in your contract. If the seller has made any other promises, like providing you with some training or advice, be sure it’s included in the contract. Spoken promises aren’t worth the air behind them. As the buyer, you want to be sure that the seller won’t immediately go into a competing business. Therefore, a contract typically includes a covenant not to compete. The seller agrees not to run a competing business within the same area for a set time for easy money in oblivion.

The seller may be willing to work for you or with you for a period of time after the sale to help with the transition. Be sure that the details of this are clearly spelled out in the contract. The terms would include whether you’ll pay him for his help, how it’s to be set up, and how long he’ll hang around.

What Goes Into Your Home Business Plan

Every business plan should contain certain basic information. Also, it’s helpful to arrange this information in a logical order. This is where the outline comes in. It’s a recipe for business plan success, containing not only information about your business, but also documents that you have to include with the plan. Using an outline also helps with organization. The order of items in the list makes sense to loan officers and other sources of capital.

A cover sheet is the first element of an easy money group business plan to make an important first impression. The first view of your business plan is the cover sheet, and it’s the first thing the loan officers and others will see. Make sure it’s typed and well laid out.

On the cover sheet, include the name of your company, its address, and the business’ phone number. If the business has an email or Internet address, put it in as well. Also include your name as owner.

You may consider numbering each copy so you can keep track of how many easy money group plans are floating around. You should also include a date on the cover sheet. This is important if you revise the plan later. A date on the plan helps you distinguish between older and newer versions.

Write a one-page general statement about why you wrote the plan. Generally the statement is your objective of raising start-up capital or a loan for expansion. Be specific about the dollar amount you’re trying to raise.

Create a table of contents. To help the lender see how your plan is organized, write a table of contents listing each part of the plan and the appendixes. Include page numbers so readers can find their way around easily.

Add an executive summary. You may sometimes see this called a summary description. It’s a brief sentence or two about each of the other parts of the business plan. This is your attention grabber, just like a snappy newspaper headline. Make sure it’s well written so that they’ll want to read on. The executive summary for the easy money group is often the first thing that loan officers and investors read. Unless it’s of interest to them, it’s also the last thing they’ll read in your plan. It must be complete enough to describe who you are, what you want and why they should give it to you.

Include a business description to contain a description of your business. This part of your business plan should contain all the essentials in the opening of any well-written news article. It should contain the who, what, where, when, and why of your business by restating your company name and address from the cover page, stating when your business was formed or that it is being formed, discussing the legal angles of the business, and describing your business.

Include a sentence about the legal organization of your business. Also mention any licenses or permits your business needs. State whether the business is independent, a takeover, a franchise, a business opportunity, or network marketing.

Tips For Recession Proof Home Based Business

Don’t let recession rumours scare you away from starting a home based business.  Of course a recession is not the ideal time to start a home based business but it can be done.  Starting a home based business is never easy so waiting for a time that things will be simple is futile.  The rewards of working for yourself are worth all the effort you need to put in to get your home based business off the ground.

Here are a few encouraging facts to keep in mind when you are starting up a home based business.  First of all, there are several well known companies that took the plunge during a recession.  Ever hear of Walt Disney?  Well, he decided to start the Disney Corporation during the recession of 1923-24.  How about Hewlett-Packard?  They started in 1938 during the Great Depression.  In 1975 Microsoft began during a recession and they have grown to be a monster of a company.  While your gift basket business may not turn out to be as big as these two, it can still thrive in a recession.

When starting up a home based business watching how much money you spend is extremely important.  Keeping cost low during a recession is a necessity.  You will need to keep your home based business costs down.  This will increase your cash flow and keep your profit margins high.  Your business overhead can be kept low due to depressed wages.  Any employees you happen to take on will have lower wages.  Also, since recessions effect all industries, goods and services will be less expensive.  Take your time and find discounted services.  The amount of effort you put forth to save money will benefit your bottom line.

Manage your home based business well.  You want to make money.  Do your invoices immediately so that you do not end up overlooking them.  Also, stick to your guns when it comes to prices.  You may want to charge just a little bit less than what your competition is to attract more business.  However, you should not offer huge discounts that will cause you not to make a good profit.

A website is absolutely essential for any home based business.  Not only do you need a website, you also must make sure that it is top of the line.  That may mean spending some money on it but that is okay.  Have a professional do your website so that you can attract the greatest number of customers.  Websites are necessary if you hope to reach a broad audience.  This is especially true in recessions.  People are searching for better deals online.  You want to make sure that they know that your home based business is out there.

Use an e-mail marketer.  This is a great service that will allow you to get e-newsletters and other information out to potential customers.  You should also have an e-commerce tool on your site so that people can purchase items with ease.  Convenience will win your customers.

Necessary Equipment For Your Home Office

Having a home based business is a great way to make a living.  If you are interested in becoming your own boss a home based business is the way to go.  The first, and one of the most important steps in the process, is making sure you have the right equipment.  When designing a home office there are a few things to take into consideration.  What type of office do you need?  Are you going for an office that will serve both business and personal computing needs?

The type of office you want will have a huge effect on where you put it.  The location where you put the office is a major consideration.  You don’t want to put the office in an area of the house that is very busy.  Try to find a remote space where you can have some privacy if you are creating a home office that is strictly used for business purposes.  A multi-purpose office is not always a good idea if you are panning on having a serious home based business.  When you work from home it is a good idea to keep home life and your business separate.

Having the proper equipment in your home based business will make work so much easier.  You don’t want to have to run between rooms in your house to carry out business transactions.  For example, you do not want to have to run to fax a document upstairs in your home computing office after printing it off in your business office.  Organization is going to be one of the biggest factors in whether or not you are successful in your home based business.  Make sure the room that you put your home office in has the right amount of space for your computer, phone, fax, work table and filing system.

You may also need a storage unit as your business grows.  Keeping documents and statements for tax write offs is vital to getting the most out of our home based business.  Having a few shelves or cubicles for filing and storage behind your work table may suffice, depending on how big your business is.  Over time you may need to add in some more storage space.

The way that your home office looks needs careful consideration.  The visual aesthetic of your home office will contribute to how productive you are.  Find furnishing that you will be comfortable in.  Invest in a chair that is going to give you good back support that has adjustable settings.  You will be spending many hours in that chair so choose carefully.  Give a few different chairs a try before you deiced to go with one.  Buy a chair with casters, pneumatic height adjustments and controls.  Being comfortable in a chair after one hours does not necessarily mean you will be comfortable in it four hours later.  If you have controls that can adjust it you will be able to find the right height and cushion to suit your body.

Venturing Into a Home Based Business With Your Spouse

Working from home has become the new American dream.  Being able to cut the work commute out and walk from your bedroom to the home office is ideal.  Being able to get rid of both you and your spouse’s commute can sound like the perfect way to build a successful business.  Who better to start a home based business with than your spouse?  Well, that is a question that can have a number of different answers.

Before you take on the challenge of building a home based business with your spouse, you should ask yourself as few questions.  First of all, do you and your spouse have similar work ethics?  This is an extremely important thing to ask yourself.  If one of you is doing more work than the other one resentment is bound to grow.  While you want to have balance in your home based business where both of you are contributing in different ways, you don’t want to end up in a 25-75 position.

Marriage is a challenge in itself.  Before you start up your own business together, think about your relationship?  How are the household duties split? Are things split evenly or is all of the work left for one person?  Does this cause conflict in your marriage?  If there are problems in your relationship before you start a home based business, don’t move forward with that idea until things are resolved.  After the issues are resolved, think about whether or not your spouse is really the type of business partner that you want.

What type of home based business are you envisioning?  Does your spouse share that view?  If you are thinking about having a part time endeavour that you run on the weekends and your spouse wants a business that becomes the only source of income, your visions are sure to clash.  Find out what you want form a home based business and compare it to what your spouse wants?  Two different visions?  Then a joint home based business may not be the way to go.

What are the two of you looking for from one another?  Expectations are always important.  Especially when it comes to what you want out of a business partner.  Figure out what you have in mind before you start making home based business plans.

Do both of you want a home based business?  Working from home is tough even when you are an employee of someone else’s company.  When you are your spouse are the bosses, things get complicated.  Having a home based business may mean quitting stable jobs.  While you or your spouse may want a reprieve from the 9-5 grind, the other party may not be ready for that.  If that happens to be the case, then maybe both of you don’t need to start up the business.  If having a home based business is your dream and your spouse is supportive, go for it.  But don’t expect your spouse to be your personal assistant.

Insurance For Home Based Businesses: Necessity Or Not?

Having a home based business does not mean that your home insurance covers your business.  However, this is not always the case.  Not only that, your home based business, depending on what it is, may void your home insurance.  When you purchase home insurance, coverage is provided to protect your home.  Participating in activities that the insurer is not aware of can invalidate home insurance.  Find out what type of home based business insurance you need before you need it.

Contents insurance is necessary to cover home based businesses. While there may be contents insurance included in the home owners insurance, an additional policy is needed.  Take some time to figure out what the worth of your home office is.  What would it cost to replace the equipment you have?  Also, think about where you use the business equipment in your home.  Do you take your laptop to the coffee shop to work occasionally?  If something happens when you are away from home your business equipment will not be covered in a home owner’s policy.

Home based businesses should also have general liability insurance.  If you see clients in your home you want to make sure that there is coverage just in case something happens to them.  Regular home insurance will not cover client or employee injury.  Coming out of pocket for such an injury will be extremely costly.

There are several other types of insurance that you may need for home based businesses.  Do you drive for your business?  If you do then you need additional car insurance.  You want to make sure that you are covered if there is ever any damage to your car.  Having liability for damage to other vehicles when you are driving for work is also important.

Malpractice insurance may seem like something that only health providers need to worry about but that is not the case.  People that perform services on others in their homes can be susceptible to malpractice lawsuits.  If you are a hair dresser you should have some malpractice insurance.  If you don’t and something happens, you can be sued.

If you are giving professional advice of any kind in your home based business, you should have errors and omissions insurance.

Home Based Businesses Offer Opportunities For Stay At Home Moms

Being a stay at home mom is one of the greatest jobs you can have.  However, with a volatile economy it is often difficult to not have that valuable second income.  Well, work does not have to always be done on a regular 9-5 schedule in an office.  A great income can be drawn from a home based business.  Design your work schedule around nap time or dinner preparation.  Find out what great opportunities home based businesses have to offer to stay at home moms.

The challenges of motherhood can be met while drawing income from a home based business.  Many of the online opportunities you will find will have stay at home mothers puling the reigns.  You may be amazed at the amount of moms that have home based businesses that they manage exclusively through the Internet.  One stay at home mom will be able to understand the needs of another stay at home mom.

If you are setting up your own home based business, have a handy business plan in place.  No matter what type of business you plan on starting, gift baskets or SEO article writing; know what you want to get out of the business.  Are you looking for spending money, or a decent income that will beef up the total household income?

First you want to get your home office set up.  This is a key component to your success.  You will need a space separate from the area where everyday Internet activities take place.  Carrying out business in the same place where you surf MySpace or watch you soaps is not a good idea.  You need to have a place where you conduct business.  A fax machine, phone line, computer with Internet access, file cabinets and a desk are essential.

Next you will need to have some type of child care.  Holding a fussy baby while you write articles or try to construct a website doesn’t work out well.  Do not look at your home based business as a chance for you to work and care for your children simultaneously.  Work in intervals if you must.  Have your husband, nanny, babysitter or mom watch the children while you work.

Start off small.  Don’t get the false impression that a home based business is easier to run than one that is away form home.  Convenience and the ability to design your own schedule are major perks.  However, you will need to put in a lot of hard work and time for your home based business to work well.

Know when to say when.  Don’t bite off more than you can chew.  This is a common mistake of newbies.  Home based businesses are ground up projects.  Initially you may not see a huge return.  However, over time your profits will increase.  When you find that you are on the verge of being overwhelmed regroup.  Do you need to take on employees?  Be careful not to burn yourself out.  Moms with home based businesses work two jobs

Creating a Successful Website For Your Home Based Business

No matter what type of business you have, a website is necessary.  The Internet is the place where a plethora of business transactions take place.  The number of merchants and buyers that never see one another face to face continues to climb.  Home based business owners need to take advantage of this trend and having a website if the first step to e-commerce success.

Of course, everyone does not know how to put a website together.  If you are starting up a home based business and are not able to put a website together, have someone else do it for you.  Before you seek out a web designer, you will want to figure out what features you want.

Choose features that will accent the type of products or services you are selling.  For example, if you are selling items to customers, you want your website to have easy to access payment options, like a Paypal button.  If you are looking to acquire clients for your Life Coach business, you will have a different format.

Once you know what qualities you want your website to have, you must decide whether or not you want to construct the website yourself or have a professional do it.  There are many freelance web designers that will offer you a fair price for a great website. However, there is also plenty of web design software out there that can give you similar results.  Dreamweaver from Adobe can help you create a beautiful website but it may take you a while to figure out how to use it.  It can also be a little pricey so taking advantage of the 30 day free trial is a good idea.  See if you understand what is going on and if you can maneuver your way around things.  If you can, great.  Buy the software and getting going on making a great website.

The other side of the coin is that you may not have the skills to make a great website even with Dreamweaver.  One of the reasons that web design is often contracted out by businesses is because there is more to web design than just building a website.  Website layout is also very important.  There are a fair amount of poorly constructed websites around the Internet.  You don’t want to add to that number.  Contact a professional if you are totally clueless about web design.

Finding a web designer can be easier than you think and it could be free.  Many community colleges have job boards where you can post volunteer opportunities as well as paying ones.  Contact the board administrator, usually the webmaster, who will be a student or professor in the web design department and inquire.  Students that are looking to build their portfolio will jump at the chance to try out their skills.

If you do end up having to pay for a website to be built, go with a freelance web designer.  There services are easy to get.  There are plenty of site (Freelancewriting.com, Get-A-Freelancer.com) that allow webs designers to bid on projects.  Many of these sites do not require a fee, or much money to set up an account.  Freelancers are always out there looking for work and some of them will negotiate with you when it comes to price.

Ways To Have A Successful E-mail Marketing Campaign

If you have a business or service that you are trying to promote, you may consider an e-mail marketing campaign.  While this may help you it may not be as effective as you think it will be. Sending out e-mail newsletters that are beautifully designed are not the way to promote your business. You want to send out a newsletter that is packed full of incentives for people to take advantage of your new business.

When you are writing up an e-mail marketing newsletter you inform recipients about exactly what you want them to know about your company.  Try not to have to make links.  This just distracts from advertising.  Give them the details of your business and tell them about any specials that you have going at the time.

What does it mean when people opt-in?  When you hear people talk about opting in it means that permission has been given to send them e-mail.  Mailing lists are compiled of e-mails that are willing to receive information.  In the beginning of the e-mail marketing list is empty.  In order to get emails the owners have to request to be put on the list.

The way to get people to sign up for newsletters is to have a form on your website that they can fill out.  Once they fill out the form you will be able to send them newsletters and other correspondence about your home based business.  When you  set up these forms make sure that you get customers to explicitly agree to receive the information you are going to send them. That means you need to set up a statement next to the form that says something like, “Yes, I want to receive your newsletter” or something along those lines.

Make the newsletters that you send through your e-mail marketing campaign interesting while sticking to the facts.  Start off with eye catching coupons or announcements of sales.  Then move into other information about your business.

Find e-mail addresses through previous correspondence from former email campaigns.  This can be done by conducting an email address search.  Check out e-mail directories and the white pages.  You can search public records and MySpace for more people to send information to.

Some people have luck with finding e-mail addresses by guessing.  This is not a terribly effective way to generate leads but if you are desperate, it can help out.  Doing an e-mail address search for associates and old friends can be another way to build up your e-mail list.  Take advantage of social networks as well.  There are numerous social networking sites where you can meet people and get e-mail addresses from.  Join and reap the benefits.

While it may be challenging to build up your e-mail list, it is worth your time.  You should not expect the e-mail marketing campaign to be the key to the success of your home based business.  Instead you should look at it as part of the equation when it comes to building your business.
